Aparajeyo 71

Invincible time of struggle, sacrifice, heroism is seventy-one. The bright memory of the great liberation war of 1971 will provide motivation to all freedom seekers for ages. And so to increase the glory of this liberation war period, like other parts of the country, Liberation War Memorial 'Aparajeyo 71' has been constructed in Thakurgaon. After 42 years of independence, a memorial 'Aparajeyo-71' has been constructed on the banks of Tangon river near the city. Built in a scenic setting on the banks of the river, the memorial was designed and engineered by engineer Shahriar Alam and sculpted by Swadhin Chowdhury. The altar of Aparajeyo '71 with a height of 71 feet is 1976 square feet in area. 6 steps and stairs are placed in the altar. This 'Aparajeya-71' built at a cost of 36 lakh taka on the initiative of the district commissioner has been financed by the local non-governmental organization ESDO.

A preliminary design called 'Muktir Mandir Sopan Thale' was prepared when the construction of this memorial was undertaken. Originally it was a memorial to the anti-British movement, Tevaga and the Great War of Liberation. Later, the design was called for the purpose of erecting the present monument named Aparajeyo '71. Key points of the chosen design were-

• The memorial will be 71ft. Since the Great War of Liberation took place in 1971.

• The memorial will have five 71 feet pillars as there are five upazilas in Thakurgaon district.

• The height of the main altar of the memorial will be 9 feet from the ground. Since the liberation war has been 9 months.

• The rifle-bayonet length of the memorial will be 26 feet. Since the liberation war started on March 26.

• Bayonets will be accompanied by 5 peace pigeons, representing the five upazilas of Thakurgaon district.
