Tangon Barrage

Tangon Barrage is located in Chapati village of Ward No. 6 of Rajagaon Union Parishad of Ruhia, Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila, its implementation started in 1984-1985 and its work was completed in 1992-1993. The objective of the project was to provide irrigation facilities in the Aman season of the area. The land covered by the project is 6070 hectares and irrigable land is 4450 hectares. The water discharge capacity of the barrage is 287 cubic meters per second.

Tangon River flows evenly through Bangladesh-India. It is a transboundary river. The river enters Bangladesh from West Bengal, India. Tangon is a tributary of Punarbhava river. Tangon Barrage has been built to control water sharing between the two countries. During the monsoon season, this barrage area attracts the attention of tourists. A different form of natural beauty is spread over the barrage area. However, even in winter, Tangon Barrage gives a different look to the tourists.

Every year the water decreases in winter, but in the rainy season, the water level in Tangan rises. Fish are officially released in the floodplain of the Tangon Barrage built on the Tangon River under the Fisheries Department during the peak season. After three months, when the gates of the barrage were opened, a five-day long fishing festival began here. Fishermen from various districts of the country including Panchagarh, Dinajpur Nilphamari come here and pitch their tents, some on banana rafts and some on boats to hunt fish in a wide area. Thousands of people gather here every day. Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world, can be seen from the top of the Tangon barrage.

Tangon Barrage is 19 kilometers north from Thakurgaon town over the Senua River. You can go there by baby taxi, autobike and microbus. By blocking the water of the river upstream, a breathtaking view is created. People from different regions rushed to Tangon Barrage area to spend their leisure time.
