Saguni Rubber Dam

Tangon river flows through Dinajpur and Thakurgaon districts. On one side of the river is Bochaganj Upazila of Dinajpur and on the other side is Pirganj Upazila of Thakurgaon district. Even in the 1980s, the river used to flow strongly for twelve months. But now, like other rivers in this region, Tangon river is also dying due to loss of youth.

Tangan's loss of youth also affects the surrounding areas of the river. The ground water level drops in vast areas on both sides of the river. About 20,000 hectares of arable land in Bochaganj and Pirganj upazilas on both sides of the Tangon river were left uncultivated during the dry season due to lack of water. Cultivating these 20,000 hectares would cost three times more than normal. Because of this, most of the land was lying uncultivated. To solve this problem, a rubber dam was constructed in 2013 to hold water in the dry season in the Tangon river flowing through two upazilas. Ever since the construction of this rubber dam, the people of about 21 villages of the two upazilas have been smiling.

About 20,000 hectares of land on both sides of the Tangon river come under the irrigation of rubber dam. After the construction of the rubber dam, the lives of hundreds of farmers in this area changed. In Ranirghat of Bochaganj upazila and Saguni rubber dam of Pirganj upazila, the rubber dam inflates and holds enough water in the river bed. And with that water, during the current dry season, farmers cultivated the land in a large area of about 21 villages on both sides of Tangan including Sultanpur, Senihari, Futkibari, Ranirghat and Saguni, Banshgara, Chapor, Machalandpur, Mashaldangi, Shirail, Jagannathpur, Chandohar in Bochaganj upazila.
